Milonguero (close embrace) Style Workshops

There will be 2 Streams of workshops, with 3 workshops in each stream. There will be a maximum of 12 couples in each workshop.

Stream 1 (Wednesdays 7-8:30pm) Wkshop 1 (24 Aug), Wkshop 3 (31 Aug), & Wkshop 5 (7 Sep). This Stream is for those new to the milonguero tango style. We are going to work on how to find a comfortable embrace and mastering the basic milonguero steps with confidence and good posture.

Stream 2 (Thursdays 7-8:30pm) Wkshop 2 (25 Aug), Wkshop 4 (1 Sep), & Wkshop 6 (8 Sep)  This group is recommended for more experienced dancers and who want to master the basics and be creative in the dance with more complex possibilities in close embrace. You can also book into Stream 1 after 30 June if there are spaces available. Please see Kim or Deidre for those bookings.

Guided Practica: the guided practicas will be conducted on Thursdays (8:30-10 pm) after the Stream 2 workshops. The practicas will combine streams 1 and 2. During the tango practices, we will help you learn how to practice. Detect mistakes, correct movements, find solutions and think about the dance. Achieving good practice is what truly leads us to improve our dance. It is the space we have to process the new information acquired in the classes before applying it to the social dance in the milonga.

The practice is a place of exploration, search and development of our dance. If in a practice we only dance like in the milonga we will only be practising our habits, and many times repeating the same mistake without thinking over and over again. This makes the process of seeing an improvement result in our dance much slower. We hope that after these practices the students are more aware of the difference between "the class", "the practice", and "the milonga", and how to practice more efficiently.

The embrace is everything and everything is in the embrace.  We will focus on social dance, communication in the embrace, finding space inside the embrace, and organising the fundamental tango elements (basics structures, e.g. giros, pivots, sacadas, change of directions etc) in communication, with musical interpretation and technique. We will break these structures down and to achieve creativity in the dance without sacrificing the connection in the embrace. The critical elements of milonguero style are: (1) music, (2) rhythm, (3) close connection, and (4) taking care of your partner.

After these classes you will have a more solid base on which to build your dance. You will know how to maintain connection, how to be comfortable and creative in the embrace and maintain a line of dance (ronda) at a crowded milonga. This means you will dance with confidence, good posture, and style in any milonga in Argentina, or indeed the world.
