Dance the Tango Today
Lesser Town Hall, 82 Cambridge Street, West Leederville, Perth
Thursdays, 7:30 – 8:30 pm - 12 June to 17 July
Tango Basics is an 6-week dance course for adults, covering the fundamental movements, structure, and music of Argentine tango. It is ideal for complete beginners—no previous experience or partner is required, although couples are most welcome. This course is also suitable for dancers returning to tango after a long break or wanting to revisit the essential elements.
You’ll learn: walking, turning, stopping, navigation, musicality, and a few embellishments. By the end of the course, students will be able to participate confidently in a milonga (social dance). The eighth lesson concludes with a social "graduation" milonga finishing at 10:00 pm.
Fees
$95 per person for 6 weeks. This includes Perth Tango Club membership, which offers:
– Reduced entry fees to Club events
– Free parking during Club events
Existing members pay only $50.
New students are also encouraged to attend our guided practica sessions (Tuesday evenings and Sunday afternoons) free of charge, and to join our regular social dances during the term.
Course Registration
Arrive at 7:00 pm on Thursday to register. New registrations are accepted only during the first two weeks of the course.
Taste of Tango (Free Intro)
From 7:00 to 7:30 pm, a Taste of Tango session provides an obligation-free introduction for newcomers. The class then continues from 7:30 to 8:30 pm. If possible, we encourage you to arrive at 7:00 pm for this bonus half-hour of dancing and orientation.
What to Wear
Comfortable, neat casual clothing. Dance shoes are ideal, but any shoes that allow you to pivot freely are fine. Please avoid rubber-soled shoes, as they can grip the floor and strain your knees.
Hygiene
Argentine tango is danced in close embrace. Good personal hygiene ensures a pleasant experience for everyone.
Guided Practica
We also offer practice sessions called practica:
– Tuesdays, 7:00 – 9:30 pm
– Sundays, 3:00 – 5:00 pm
These sessions are free for our new students and are a great way to reinforce what you've learned, meet your fellow students, and connect with Club members.
Our Teachers
The first six weeks of the course will be led by Nick Furlan, who will guide students through the fundamentals of walking, turning, stopping, navigation, musicality, and a few embellishments. Nick is a well-known and experienced teacher in the Perth tango community, widely respected for his clear instruction and deep understanding of the dance.
