Workshops on Tango Vals

with Nick & Camelia Furlan (Perth Tango Society)

Presented in partnership with Perth Tango Club

Join us this June as Perth Tango Club and the Perth Tango Society of WA teaming up to host an exciting 3-part Vals workshop series featuring Nick & Camelia!

Each 2-hour session is designed to deepen your understanding of the unique rhythm, musicality, connection, and movement vocabulary of Vals. Over the course of three progressive Saturday workshops, you'll build your skills step by step—though each session is also structured to stand alone, offering valuable insights on its own.

Workshop Schedule:

·        Feel the Flow – Saturday, 7 June, 2–4pm

·        Play with the Music – Saturday, 14 June, 1–3pm

·        Dance with Dynamism – Saturday, 21 June, 2–4pm

$30 for Perth Tango Club or Tango Society members
$35 for non-members

No pre-booking required. Come to any session—or join all three for a fuller experience (and to avoid missing out!).

Workshop Details

Part 1 – Feel the Flow (June 7, 2–4pm): Discover the unique rhythm and structure of Vals in this focused session. You'll tune into the 6/8 feel, learn to walk with 1-2-3 and 1-3-1 rhythms, and then refine the Grapevine movement with pivots and flow. Build confidence in circular movement while exploring simple turns and rhythmic variations that enhance your musical connection and expression.

Part 2 – Play with the Music (June 14, 1–3pm): In this session, we build on the foundations from Part 1, adding musical play and flowing variations to expand your repertoire. We’ll explore multiple Boleos, creative changes of direction in Molinete, and long, expressive Sacadas—all while keeping movement fluid and a connected embrace. You will discover how to add elegant embellishments with leg wraps for added flair and fun.

This session leads straight into the Perth Tango Club Saturday Practica—perfect for immediate practice!

Part 3 – Dance with Dynamism (June 21, 2–4pm): This final session introduces more dynamic and expressive tools: simple Cadenas (flowing turns),  Ocho embellishments, straight-line Ochos with rhythm for close or open embrace. We’ll integrate techniques from the previous weeks into versatile combinations suitable like carousel with boleos for crowded dance floors, enabling you to improvise and respond to the music.
