Perth Tango Festival

Buenos Aires comes to Perth! We invite you to the Perth Tango Festival with world-leading artists, performances, live music, top DJs, six milongas and workshops for all levels.  

Immerse yourself in workshops led by world Tango champion Maria Ines Bogado and her partner Sergiy Podbolotnyy, along with the brilliant maestros Rodrigo Fonti and Fabio Robles & Michelle Di Monte from Melbourne. Our outstanding musical lineup includes the Mendoza Quartet, featuring the captivating vocals of Solange Lipcin. Completing the experience, our esteemed DJs include Rodrigo Fonti, Alex Nodelman, Terry Warby, and Susan Bal-Short.  

October brings springtime to Perth, with beautiful weather and blooming wildflowers. Explore Cottesloe Beach, Rottnest Island, and Margaret River's wineries.

"Featuring María Inés Bogado ..."


Renowned Argentine tango dancer and instructor,  María Inés Bogado, has been an influential figure in the tango world for over two decades. With a remarkable career spanning 25 years, María Inés's dedication and passion for tango culminated in her 2010 victory as the World Champion in the Tango Salon category, as well as securing the top prize in the Vals category of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Tango Championship. 

Having honed her craft under the guidance of esteemed mentors such as Diego Gauna, Graciela Gonzales, Sabrina & Ruben Veliz, Rosa Forte, and Carlos Perez, María Inés brings a wealth of expertise to her teaching and performances. Her journey has taken her to stages across six continents, captivating audiences with her unparalleled talent and deep-rooted love for tango and Argentine Folklore. 

María Inés has also lent her expertise to numerous festivals and workshops worldwide, collaborating with renowned partners such as Sebastián Jimenez, Jorge Lopez, and Roberto Zuccarino. With her extensive experience and unwavering commitment to tango, María Inés Bogado continues to inspire dancers of all generations.

Originating from Ukraine, Sergiy Podbolotnyy developed a deep attraction to the profound partner connection intrinsic to tango. From 2010 to 2019, Sergiy cultivated a thriving tango community as the founder of the esteemed TangoGo Dance School in Shanghai, China. 

In 2020, Sergiy embarked on a new chapter by co-founding the "Superior Tango" project in Kyiv, Ukraine, alongside María Inés Bogado. This collaborative initiative aimed to elevate the skills of local dancers and foster a deeper appreciation for tango within the community. 

Their partnership flourished with the co-organization of the Bailemos Festival in 2021, marking the beginning of a fruitful partnership that continues to enrich tango communities worldwide through their joint participation in international festivals and workshops.

"RODRIO FONTI ...."


Rodrigo Fonti is a creative and innovative tango dancer and teacher from Argentina. He began dancing tango at 16 and later studied modern dance at the Experimental Contemporary Dance School. His unique style blends tango with contemporary dance, combining freshness, finesse, and depth. Rodrigo is in high demand at tango festivals around the world and has a large following and fanbase.

Rodrigo’s teaching approach is organic, helping students discover their own personal dance style, encouraging them to connect deeply with their movement and fully immerse themselves in the music. His ongoing exploration of movement and the language of tango creates a distinctive fusion of traditional and modern styles.

While in Perth, Rodrigo will offer workshopsinteractive guided practicas, and private lessons. We’re also fortunate that his talents extend to DJing – he’ll be opening our Festival as a DJ.

"And Fabio & Michelle ...."


Fabio Robles is a distinguished director, dancer, and choreographer renowned for his pioneering contributions to Latin dance culture in Australia. With a career spanning decades, he has graced prestigious stages worldwide, including the Sydney Opera House and Luna Park in Argentina. Fabio's impressive resume includes choreographing and performing in acclaimed productions such as the Dirty Dancing Musical and touring with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He has also showcased his talent on television shows like Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance. Fabio's expertise and passion for tango have earned him recognition as the Australian Tango Champion and a finalist in the World Tango Championship multiple times. His enduring legacy in the dance world continues to inspire dancers across the globe.

Michelle Di Monte started her tango journey in her 40s alongside her life partner and mentor, Fabio Robles. Over the span of 7 years, she honed her skills under his attentive guidance, evolving into a spirited and genuine milonguera. Michelle's journey, despite beginning without any prior dance or athletic background, highlights her remarkable transformation, showcasing the incredible possibilities that dedication and passion can unlock.

Michelle first encountered Tango in Buenos Aires in 2011, where she was captivated by its intimate interplay of touch, breath, and vibrations between dancers. She believes Tango, rooted in authenticity, embraces diverse styles and attitudes, making it the cultural phenomenon it is today.

Together with Fabio, Michelle shares her expertise by teaching and performing at various events. Their debut appearance took place at the Tango Summit in Los Angeles in 2018, marking the beginning of their collaborative journey in spreading the joy of tango.

"LIVE MUSIC"


The Mendoza Tango Quartet, acclaimed as Australia's most danceable tango band, seamlessly guides audiences from the elegant dance halls to the underground clubs of Buenos Aires. Comprised of fiery musicians specialising in traditional Argentinian tango, the quartet, often featured at Australia's premier tango festivals, delivers impassioned performances transcending clichés. With the bandoneón's quintessential fervour and the velvety voice of Solange Lipcin, they revive tango's rich history, spanning from the 1930s to the avant-garde of the 21st century, in a captivating journey through time and emotion.

"Our DJs"


Rodrigo Fonti is back! Rodrigo is a young, creative, funny and passionate tango dancer, born in southern Argentina. Rodrigo is a maestro extraordinaire but was also a very popular Dj at the Perth Tango Club last year. Rodrigo's music selection is spontaneous drawing from an electric mix blending seamlessly from the Golden Age to contemporary beats.


Alex Nodelman  has a unique and vibrant style is an invitation to an unforgettable dance experience. He is known for his limitless range of unique and special tracks with the highest possible audio quality. His collection of rare pieces allows him to create distinctive sets and memorable tandas loved by those who enjoy the Golden Age tango with speckles of something different and intriguing. Every milonga, every tanda is individually tailored to the dancers on the floor taking into account the mood of the room at every given moment. DJ Alex’s underlying love of tango is his motivation to share his music with all the Tango World.  

Terry Warby, a seasoned DJ with a decade of experience in Perth, has honed his craft to become one of the most sought-after talents in the Tango DJing scene. Over the past four years, he has been electrifying Melbourne's milongas with his dynamic sets, meticulously tailoring his playlists to the unique tastes of tango dancers. Terry's exceptional ability to sense the atmosphere and read the crowd enables him to select tandas that keep the dance floor vibrant and energetic throughout the night. As a result, he has earned immense respect and admiration in both Perth and Melbourne, cementing his reputation as one of Australia's top DJs in the Tango circuit.  

Sue Bal-Short, Sue Bal-Short is a talented performing arts and music educator with over 10 years of DJ experience in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Perth, Australia. Known for her skill in blending traditional tangos with modern orchestras, she creates a delightful experience for dancers. Sue will DJ the closing fringe (Wednesday) Milonga, bringing a joyful party atmosphere full of 'onda'.

Our amazing venues


The timeless elegance of  Perth Town Hall, a landmark of heritage and community, is reflected in its architectural significance and historical importance as a gathering place for the community. Its floating wooden floor is ideal for dancing. Easily accessible via public transport, multiple bus routes and train lines make reaching it effortless. Situated in the heart of the Central Business District, dining options abound nearby, while convenient parking is available at Wilson Parking on Hay Street and City of Perth Parking on St Georges Terrace.


The Regent Ballroom is a recently opened venue in the heart of the thriving nightlife area Northbridge. Formerly a boxing gym, the venue now sports a beautiful wooden floor with chandeliers and licenced bar. The venue is an ideal location for our opening night with Mendoza Quartet. 


Our Sunday afternoon milonga will be held in the Vietnam Memorial Pavilion, Kings Park. One of the most popular venue options in Kings Park, the Vietnam Memorial Pavilion is a spacious venue surrounded by manicured lawns and mature trees, with views out to the ornamental lake. Arrive early to take an opportunity to book a free tour and experience Western Australia's unique wildflowers in full bloom.


The Perth Tango Club Hall is the home of our tango club for almost 20 years now.  The hall is an historic building  reflecting the heritage and architectural style of a bygone era located at 82 Cambridge Street West LeedervilleWith polished wooden floors and 100 years of character, the Hall adds a nostalgic ambience to any tango event and is particularly suited to stage performances.
